520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. |
Summary, etc |
A state-of-the-art summary of current laboratory, clinical, and epidemiological findings on 10 viral haemorrhagic fevers, the majority of which have emerged in recent years. For each disease, information is provided on etiology, epidemiology, transmission, clinical and laboratory diagnosis, pathology, effects on the immune system, and treatment. Where possible, groups at special risk are identified. In view of the many special public health problems created by these virus diseases, the report also features sections covering laboratory etiological investigations, principles of laboratory safety, guidelines for surveillance and control, and strategies for vector control. The concluding section extends expert advice on diagnosis and treatment. The report, which records the conclusions reached by several experts and many collaborating laboratories, assumes particular importance in view of the epidemic potential and often high fatality rate of the viral haemorrhagic fevers and the unusual difficulties in treating and preventing them. |
