N2  - This thesis lies at the intersection of two broad themes in economics: education and identity. Education is a primary tool for building human capital in economies. It has been recognised as the driver of economic prosperity via research and innovation (Barro 2001; Aghion et al. 2009; Hanushek and Woessmann 2010). At the same time,
education is also touted as the driver of social progress and institutional change. A more educated society fares better on indices of equality (Gylfason and Zoega 2003), health (Ross and Wu 1995; Cutler and Lleras-Muney 2006) and political awareness and participation (Mayer 2011)
