520 _aThe book contains the history of the State Bank of India. the roots of the State Bank of India go back to 1806 when its first predecessor, the Bank of Calcutta was set up in Calcutta under the authority of the East India Company's Government in India. The bank which combined deposit banking with the right of note issue, was an unique institution at a time when joint-stock banking with limited liability had not emerged in India.
